Business Spotlight - Coda Coffee
Tim and Tommy Thwaites, brothers from America’s coffee heartland, left the Seattle area in search of adventure and prosperity. They took different paths but reconnected in Denver, Colorado. Over the years they had acquired a significant amount of experience in the specialty coffee industry. They have studied all facets of coffee from the origin characteristics of green coffees, to the art of roasting, through drink preparation and retail interface. As young entrepreneurs with a combined 24 years industry experience, they partnered with Tom Sr. to develop Coda Coffee Company. The mission is simple: to set the standard for coffee excellence through education, advocacy, and partnerships. With the belief that success is reciprocal, Coda will do what it takes to exceed expectations.
At age 18 Tommy was invited to work for a small start-up coffee roaster in the greater Seattle area. It was the unwitting start of a long happy career in coffee. He spent 7 years developing industry knowledge, cultivating a passion for specialty coffee, and helping the roaster achieve exponential growth. During that time, he also earned a B. S. in Physics from The Evergreen State College. In a fortuitous move to the Southwest, new opportunities arose and Tommy explored other avenues of the coffee industry. He gained experience in retail management and helped a successful retail chain develop a national franchise program. He also continued to lead trainings and seminars on various topics at Coffee Fest trade shows throughout the country. After settling in Denver, Tommy joined his brother in making an entrepreneurial dream come true, opening Coda Coffee Company. It is the final movement of his career in the coffee industry, and a return to the beginning, with a small start-up coffee roaster. Besides coffee, Tommy has a love for aviation and the outdoors. When not talking coffee, Tommy can be found climbing, hiking, skiing, or fishing somewhere in the Rockies with his lovely wife Patty and son Memphis.
Tim was introduced to the coffee industry when he was 16 years old. He started sweeping the floors of a small coffee roaster in Buckley, Washington, and immediately became fascinated with specialty coffee. Taking in everything he could from the relatively new business, he soon was running the operations of the warehouse. During that time period, Tim mastered the art of cupping and profiling coffee from all over the world, and soon was promoted to Roastmaster. He has a thorough background in coffee brewing techniques, specifically espresso. When Tommy and Tim joined in Denver to begin Coda, Tim brought with him seven years of roasting and brewing experience. Now he applies that experience to create the outstanding cup of coffee that Coda is all about. Like his brother, Tim is an outdoor lover and a particularly avid skier and river rafting guide. He enjoys both playing and watching sports, and is a diehard Seattle Seahawks fan. In addition to the outdoors and sports, Tim also enjoys aviation. He received a B.S. in Flight Technology, specializing in Aviation Management from Central Washington University, and a Private Pilot License from Northwest Aviation College. When not standing at the helm of the roaster, Tim and his wife, Jessica, can be found exploring the wilderness of Colorado.
